Another Night (5:38)

Picture
Simon Gillespie is an entertainment fireball and fabulous all-rounder. “Another Night”, AKA "The Gaydar Song", performed by Simon Gillespie and accompanied by composer Jye Bryant, was specially commissioned by Simon as part of his cabaret show  "SEX” performed during the 2010 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. The show tells the story of a gay man, from adolescence to old age, in a series of standards and show tunes. “Another Night” is the middle-age link.

Simon approached friend and writer Susanna to pen the lyrics and, because she’s not a gay man, Simon very kindly helped her with her research by subscribing her to Gaydar – as a hunky, spunky well-endowed Adonis! Well! In no time at all... you can imagine the offers ‘he’ had. But she did her research, disappointed a lot of guys, and came back to Simon all hot and bothered and with these lyrics. Simon and mutual friend, Peter A Cross cut a few verses (she did a lot of research) and Jye Bryant composed, arranged and performed the music for both the stage and this film version.

SIMON GILLESPIE
Born in England, Simon Gillespie graduated from the Guildford School of Acting (GSA Conservatoire) in the Class of ’84.
Simon has appeared in London’s West End and the major repertory and touring houses of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
Cabaret has been a constant feature in Simon’s career and he now enjoys enormous popularity as a solo performer both internationally and in Australia. Simon is also a highly popular feature artist appearing on cruise ships globally.
Simon’s wealth of experience in theatre, TV, film, radio and cabaret have resulted in a strong sense of theatricality and presentational value, which he brings to each new project. He is known as an exacting and energetic performer, with an eye for detail and the ability to deliver.
Simon is very jealous of Jye Bryant's string of letters after his name...

Jye hopes you enjoy SEX as much as he does!

CONTRIBUTORS
In the strong belief that SEX is always better with other people involved, I'd like to express my limitless thanks to Sue Bonaretti and Peter Cross for their incredible generosity and talent. These two wonderful people have provided me with a wealth of brilliant words and coffee.
One day I might even be able to pay them!

       (Melody 1 - bluesy)
          Another night, alone again.
Another glass to drown the pain.
I used to hit the bars, a one-night stand.
Now my closest friend is my right hand.

I’m sick of dates that haven’t shown.
I’m also sick of making love alone.
Am I so old, and fat, and grey,
          that everyone just runs away?

So Sydney queens want something hot.
Where can I be something that I’m not
          and turn solo into duet?
          I guess I’ll hit the internet…

       Action:  Opens laptop, taps keys
       (Singing – new tempo)

       (Melody 2 – upbeat patter)
          Type, type, type, type
type, type, type, typing frantically away.
          Tap, tap, tap, tap
tap, tap, tap, tapping looking for a lay.
        (Stop. Spoken)        Oh! Shit!
          Back space, back space,
back space, back space, concentrate and centre! (Click)
          Searching, searching,
there it is! Click on it and enter! (Click)

(Stop. Spoken)        OH. MY. GOD! GAYDAR! Join now (Click)

       (Resume singing)
          Type, type, type, type
type, type, type, typing my email address.
          Gay man, single,
                    couple, group? Ha ha, yes!
          All these questions! Simon,
                    must impress the youth.
          Answer each one
straight and candid. Only tell the truth.
          Date of birth?
                    That one’s easy. February twenty-two,
          nineteen fift--
                    nineteen sixt— nineteen seventy-two.
          Body type?
Well defined – Well, haven’t I defined it?
          Body hair.
I’ll shave it off if they really, really mind it.
          Size of dick.
I know the schtick; it matters in the clinches.
          I know mine’s ten.
Now, where is see-em? (Click) Oh, darn! I’ve put down inches.
          Smoker? No.
Drugs, don’t do. Drinker? Almost not at all.
          Upload picture.
That one’s good, hardly Photoshopped at all.
          User name.
                    Something cute… something cute…some…where over the—hill!
                    “Rejected queen”? “Old Has Been”?
          What’s wrong with “Bill”?
       (Spoken) B. I. L. L. Enter. OH! MY! GOD!

  (Tempo change)

       (Melody 3 – fast)
Do I want a Top from China
          or a chubby dress designer
or a Sub who’s into water sports and rimming?

          There are balding big-ball bears,
          spankers, wankers, M. S. pairs…
Oh my God, there’s even trans-sex women!

          Muscle-men or skinny guys
in leather, denim, suits and ties,
I’m sure that I’ll find someone who will please.

          Skimming though these endless lists
          of hapless, horny optimists
each peddling their fantasy and sleaze

          It’s filled me with anxiety.
          No limits or propriety
to what they’ll do, they’ll push it to the brink

What’s wrong with that, I hear you say.
          I know I’m eager for a lay
but I’ve got standards! Christ! I need a drink!

Should I be labelled as a prude
or just succumb to something crude?
Indulge in wanton pleasure and in pain?

What a feast is this buffet
          but all I want’s a normal gay!
I swear this font is giving me migraine!

       (Tempo change)

       (Melody 1 - bluesy)
So Sydney queens want something hot.
          I can’t be something that I’m not.
          And, me…Adonis, the perfect catch--
       (Computer sound) Ding!
Oh, my God! They’ve found a match!
       Beat.
(Spoken) Bill?! Bill? I’m Bill! Stuff it! Who’s on Grindr?
