Palazzo Bonaretti or Portico di Bonaretti
Novellara was founded around the 14th century when the Gonzaga family built their fortified castle, La Rocca.
Research is continuing on how the town developed however, speculating, the town would have grown around the fortress and have a main square for important markets, and community gatherings and celebrations. Being the most important part of the town, the square would have incorporated the most important of buildings around it.
The main square in Novellara is now known as Piazza Unità d’Italia and on its western side, facing eastward into the square, is the most important church of the town, the parish church of Santo Stefano, its foundation stone laid on 20th March, 1567. Because of its importance, the northern, western and southern borders of the square would have been acquired and developed over the centuries by the more influential and prestigious personages of the district. On both the northern and southern sides, large covered colonnaded porticoes were built by those important and wealthy citizens.
Part of the conjoined porticoes on the southern side of the square was (and still is) known as il Portico di Bonaretti or Palazzo Bonaretti. (Palazzo translates simply as ‘building’.)
Research into this building also is continuing but what can be ascertained by the current state of the portico and the scant history of the Bonaretti family, is that it may have been erected in the 18th century – maybe even earlier – but this is purely a guesstimate. It is whimsy to imagine the wealthy forebears of Nazzareno Bonaretti owning this part of town and the life they must have enjoyed there so long ago.
Sadly, the building now is in a forlorn, dilapidated state but, being on the main square of this country town, shouts the realtor’s catch-cry: “Position! Position! Position!”
These images are from various public and private sources and acknowledgement is given where known.

Palazzo Bonaretti
In the historic centre of Novellara, the prestigious "Palazzo Bonaretti", restored in the late 1800s, overlooks the main square of the city, Piazza Unità d’Italia.
Novellara, a town of about 14,000 inhabitants located in the Reggio plain, was recognised in 2003 as a "city of art" due to the presence of an original urban layout, dating back to the 16th century, which has remained almost intact until today and with numerous monumental buildings. Ordered by the Gonzaga and designed by Lelio Orsi. The heart of the city is the Piazza Unità d'Italia, rectangular in shape with golden proportions, surrounded by large arcades and closed to the west by the collegiate church of S. Stefano.
The restoration project of "Palazzo Bonaretti" aims to create spaces with different uses and values ranging from cultural to gastronomic, from recreational to residential, from commercial to services. The most important design part, on which the whole intervention revolves, is certainly the transformation of the internal courtyard into a multifunction room (conferences, meetings, shows, gala dinners, exhibitions, etc.) equipped with an innovative mobile and transparent cover. At P.T. a part of the existing spaces will be destined to implement the activities already existing in the adjacent “Galleria S. Stefano”, with the extension of the tasting and gourmet bar and the adjoining library. On the opposite side of the courtyard, with respect to the bar-library, there will be a large kitchen, designed with the help of the Italian School of Haute Cuisine of Colorno, which has made a strong contribution to the organisation of the spaces and related services. The kitchen will serve the quality restaurant that will be located on the first floor, with a wide view of Piazza Unità d'Italia and with an internal loggia, as well as a delicatessen shop, with fresh pasta and typical local products located at P.T. directly on the public porch, and a pastry shop, in a room that will be attached to the expanded bar, as well as a room located in the basement of the courtyard, intended for the conservation and tasting of a wide selection of wines and typical local products, such as meats and parmesan.
On the second and third floors of “Palazzo Bonaretti”, a total of 6 suites will be built, of a particularly high quality level. The intervention is completed by service spaces for scheduled cultural activities, such as reception and offices, warehouses, multipurpose spaces. A particular semicircular glass and steel staircase with panoramic lift, located in the N-E corner of the courtyard, will ensure the vertical connections between the various parts. From a numerical point of view, the intervention is spread over an area of approx. 660 m², of which about 520 m², covered by existing buildings and about 140 m² of uncovered courtyard area. Overall, the floor area affected by the intervention, on the various floors, including the basement, is approximately 920 m². Construction work will begin in 2011, to be completed in about 18-24 months.
